Alappuzha: The Haripad police are facing severe backlash for their alleged biased intervention after granting station bail to Cherai Shaji, an accused in the demolition of a small shop owned by a local trader named Ashokan. The shop was reportedly destroyed by the management of Sreevalsam Textiles using muscle power to secure parking space in front of their commercial establishment. Despite cases being registered under the Prevention of Damage to Public Property (PDPP) Act for destroying the Haripad Municipality’s handrails, the police released the accused on station bail, allegedly due to political pressure.
In the wake of the incident, Home Minister Ramesh Chennithala visited Ashokan at his residence and extended full support. However, Ashokan asserted that he does not want a temporary shop structure and demanded that a permanent shop be constructed for him within a month. Meanwhile, the Municipal Vice Chairman criticized the police’s lenient attitude toward the accused, pointing out that PDPP charges usually lead to remand even for minor offenses during protests.
Adding to the controversy, a notice issued by the Haripad Municipal Secretary asking Ashokan to vacate his own premises has triggered outrage, and the issue will be discussed in the upcoming municipal council meeting. Although Sreevalsam management agreed to build a temporary shed and compensate Ashokan daily until the permanent shop is completed, Ashokan has firmly rejected any temporary arrangements.
