Kottayam: Health Minister K. Muraleedharan announced that the practice of accommodating patients on the floor will no longer continue at Kottayam Medical College. He stated that beds will be guaranteed for all patients at the facility starting July 30. The minister made these remarks while presiding over the inauguration of the ‘Kayakalpam’ public outreach program at CMS College, Kottayam.
Kottayam will become the second medical college in the state to eliminate the practice of placing patients on the floor, following its prior implementation at Thiruvananthapuram Medical College. The minister emphasized that medical treatment, medicines, cots, and beds are fundamental rights of every patient visiting a hospital. He added that the government will take necessary measures to enhance facilities across government hospitals to end this outdated practice.
Decongesting medical colleges can be achieved by upgrading facilities at government hospitals starting from primary health centers. Currently, people visit medical colleges even for common health issues like fever. Local-level arrangements should be made to prevent such situations.
The minister also highlighted that the expansion of medical colleges in Kerala took place under the government led by former Chief Minister Oommen Chandy. He affirmed that the department’s future initiatives will be planned incorporating his vision for healthcare development.
