The Home Department has directed the police to immediately halt all further proceedings in the case registered against Wisdom Student Organisation leader Abdulla Basil following a complaint by a news anchor. Home Minister Ramesh Chennithala issued this order to the police amidst widespread protests arising from various quarters against the police action.
The Ernakulam City Cyber Crime Police had registered a case under non-bailable sections against Basil. The cyber police took action based on a complaint filed by a news anchor, who alleged that people were issuing threats against her influenced by a video made by Basil criticizing a television debate regarding Kanthapuram’s statement.
Opposition parties, student organizations, and Congress leaders came forward strongly criticizing the police action against Basil Abdulla. The MSF Malappuram District Committee raised sharp criticism over the incident, remarking that the influence of the previous Pinarayi administration has still not left the police force.
