New Delhi: India has dispatched the first consignment of components for a 70-metre Bailey bridge to flood-hit Nepal to help restore crucial road connectivity in the Betrawati region, Indian Ambassador to Nepal Naveen Srivastava confirmed.
The initial shipment of pre-fabricated structural components was handed over to Nepal’s Road Division in Hetauda on Saturday. Ambassador Srivastava shared in a post on X that additional consignments carrying remaining bridge sections will reach the neighboring country over the coming days. The Indian Embassy in Kathmandu also noted that the temporary bridge will significantly aid in restoring transport access to the Betrawati area, which was severely disrupted following recent flash floods.
A Bailey bridge is a portable, modular steel truss structure designed for rapid manual assembly without requiring heavy construction machinery or specialized technical tools.
The disaster relief assistance delivered on Saturday is part of India’s continued humanitarian support to Nepal. The disaster, triggered by intense flash floods across northern and central Nepal on August 26, has claimed nearly 1,400 lives and left over 5,000 people missing, severely damaging critical infrastructure across the Himalayan nation.
