NEW DELHI: Union Home Minister Amit Shah visited the Delhi Police headquarters on Saturday to confer with senior law enforcement officials regarding the prevailing law and order situation in the national capital. He was joined during the high-level visit by Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta.
The high-level security review comes amid a wave of ongoing protests staged by opposition political parties and student organizations targeting the Election Commission of India (ECI) over the controversial Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls.
Opposition parties have persistently alleged serious irregularities in the electoral revision exercise, demanding the immediate resignation of Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Gyanesh Kumar. The visit follows the announcement by the Congress party and allied INDIA bloc constituents to stage a mass protest rally at Ramlila Maidan on November 1, pressing for the CEC’s resignation amid escalating statewide agitation.
Congress MP Jebi Mather emphasized that the planned demonstration represents a unified consensus among opposition parties. “The November 1st rally is by the Congress party with the INDIA bloc, and it is decided after consultations with the INDIA bloc, and it’s a joint decision, and there’s nothing particular about the date, but we have a series of protests. We have had a series of protests. We have different mechanisms and systems we put in place for our demand that Gyanesh Kumar must resign,” she stated.
