KOLLAM: A tragic incident came to light in Kollam city on Friday noon when a couple was discovered inside a hotel room near the railway station after having consumed poison. The husband died on the spot, while the wife was rushed to the hospital in a critical condition. The deceased has been identified as 59-year-old Anilkumar, a native of Adichanalloor and a permanent resident of Ananthapuram Circle, TC Palya near Vishal Multi Speciality Hospital in Bengaluru. His wife, Beena (54), was initially rushed to the District Hospital but was later shifted to the Thiruvananthapuram Medical College Hospital for advanced medical care as her condition remains highly critical. According to the police, initial findings and a recovery of a suicide note from the room strongly point toward severe financial liabilities as the reason behind the extreme step.
Detailing the sequence of events, the Kollam East police stated that Anilkumar and Beena had booked Deluxe Room No. 102 on the first floor of the hotel for two days through an online hotel booking application on June 30. The couple arrived in Kollam on July 1 and checked into the facility. Hotel authorities informed the police that the couple used to go out regularly every morning for tea and meals, and their behavior showed absolutely no signs of distress or abnormality. The situation escalated on Friday morning when the hotel management attempted to contact them via intercom regarding their scheduled checkout. Receiving no telephonic response and getting no answer after knocking on the door, the management alerted the East police station.
A police team arrived promptly at the spot, broke open the locked door of the room, and discovered the couple lying completely unconscious on the bed. A subsequent search of the premises led to the recovery of a suicide note. Although both were immediately transported to the District Hospital, doctors pronounced Anilkumar dead on arrival, and his body was shifted to the hospital mortuary. The Kollam East police have officially sealed the hotel room, and a team of forensic experts is scheduled to conduct a detailed investigation on Saturday. The police confirmed that they will thoroughly investigate the source of the poison, analyze the couple’s mobile phone logs, and scrutinize the hotel’s CCTV footage. A case of unnatural death has been registered, and further vital details are expected to emerge once their sons, Hemanth and Manish, reach Kollam on Saturday.
