Kottayam: Heavy rainfall across the state over the past day resulted in widespread damage, with floodwaters submerging houses, roads, and commercial establishments. Poonjar in Kottayam district was also hit by torrential downpours, causing floodwaters to enter the residence of BJP National Executive Committee member P C George. George stated that the floods caused losses worth nearly ₹40 lakh between his house and his wife’s business establishment.
“I have been living here for the past 40 years, and I have never faced a situation like this before. This is the first time water has entered the house to this extent. At around 2 AM yesterday, a bank official living nearby knocked on our door to alert us about the rising water level. By around 2:30 AM, water started entering the house, eventually reaching a height of nearly three and a half feet. My wife Usha, second son Shane, and I were at home at the time,” P C George recalled.
“We immediately moved to the upper floor of the house. Most household appliances, including utensils, refrigerator, and TV, were completely ruined by the water. The damage inside the house alone is estimated at around ₹10 lakh, and water also entered our two Innova cars. Additionally, floodwaters inundated my wife Usha’s establishment in Poonjar, destroying stock including expensive sarees, causing an estimated loss of around ₹30 lakh,” P C George added.
The Poonjar region recorded up to 213 mm of rainfall yesterday, with water levels beginning to rise sharply in the Erattupetta area towards midnight.
