THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Museum Police have registered a criminal case against a group of BJP councilors in connection with the violent clashes that broke out during the Thiruvananthapuram Corporation council meeting. The police action follows a formal complaint lodged by women councilors representing the Congress party. According to official sources, the complaint was moved by Congress women councilors Shirley and Anita Alex against BJP councilors Chempazhanthy Udayan, Giri, Pappanamcode Saji, and Vayalkada Ratheesh. Chempazhanthy Udayan has been listed as the prime accused in the case. Meanwhile, the BJP councilors are reportedly planning to file a counter-complaint against the UDF councilors today.
The violent confrontation and physical scuffle between the UDF and BJP councilors erupted immediately after the conclusion of the Thiruvananthapuram municipal corporation council session on Monday. The local body meet was already tense due to aggressive protests staged by both UDF and LDF members, demanding the immediate resignation of BJP councilor R. Sugathan, who is currently imprisoned under the Kerala Anti-Social Activities (Prevention) Act (KAAPA). The chaos escalated to physical violence right after the Mayor declared that the day’s agendas were passed in a hurry and vacated the chair. A severe tussle over the official attendance register led to a direct physical confrontation between Congress leader K. S. Sabarinathan and BJP’s Chempazhanthy Udayan.
The UDF alleged in their complaint that Chempazhanthy Udayan forcefully snatched the attendance register in a desperate bid to falsely mark attendance for the jailed councilor R. Sugathan to save him from disqualification, and in the process, physically assaulted the protesting women councilors. On the other hand, countering the allegations, Mayor V. V. Rajesh claimed that it was the UDF councilors who aggressively tried to destroy the official register by pouring water on it, and the BJP members were merely attempting to safeguard the public document. The police have initiated a detailed probe into the incident.
