SASTHAMKOTTA: High drama and severe tension prevailed on the Sasthamkotta court premises on Monday following a direct confrontation between protesting advocates and the local police force. The lawyers had initiated a total boycott of all judicial proceedings, including the Family Court, alleging that a member of the Sasthamkotta Bar Association, Advocate Vijo V. John, was humiliated and framed in a fabricated case by the Kizhakkekallada police when he visited the station on June 23 regarding a client’s legal matter. According to the Bar Association, while the lawyers were staging a peaceful demonstration to register their protest, a police contingent aggressively entered the court complex wielding lathis. The advocates further raised serious allegations that some of the police personnel were even carrying firearms during the operation.
The standoff intensified into a major conflict when a police officer began video recording the demonstration, capturing footage of women advocates, in direct violation of legal statutes which prohibit recording inside court boundaries without prior judicial sanction. The protesting lawyers strongly questioned this unlawful act, leading to a heated verbal and physical altercation. Sensing the gravity of the situation, the Sasthamkotta Deputy Superintendent of Police (DySP) rushed to the spot and initiated talks with the Bar representatives, but the discussion failed to yield any immediate resolution. The lawyers complained that even after they had formally concluded their sit-in protest, the police force refused to vacate the premises, maintaining an intimidating presence. The Bar Association has declared that they will aggressively pursue strict legal action against the erring police officers.
