SASTHAMKOTTA: In a major crackdown, a man who had been brewing and selling illicit liquor (Charaayam) to travelers under the guise of local tourism has been arrested by the Excise enforcement squad. The arrested individual has been identified as Anilkumar, a resident of Jayanthi Nagar in Perungalam, which is part of Munroe Island—one of the prominent tourism hubs located in the Kollam district.
Excise Circle Inspector Mukesh Kumar had previously received confidential operational intelligence indicating that illicit liquor was being actively distilled in the isolated and deserted islets located around the Perungalam region. The brewed liquor was then reportedly smuggled in small country boats to the opposite banks to be distributed across various parts of West Kallada. Following the tip-off, an Excise shadow team had been closely monitoring the targeted coastal area. Anilkumar was caught red-handed by the officials while he was arriving at the location with a fresh batch of illicit liquor for sale.
The successful raid and subsequent arrest were executed by a dedicated enforcement team including Assistant Excise Inspector A. Ajith Kumar, Preventive Officer S. Sajeev Kumar, and Grade Preventive Officers Ajayan A., Jinu Thankachan, and S. Santhosh.
