Thiruvananthapuram: Chief Minister V.D. Satheesan stated that coordinated efforts among all departments and local self-government bodies are essential for the effective implementation of the Solid Waste Management Rules, 2026. He was speaking after inaugurating the state-level inauguration of regional workshops on Solid Waste Management Rules, 2026, organized by the Kerala State Pollution Control Board at Sreemoolam Club, Vazhuthacaud, Thiruvananthapuram.
The Chief Minister highlighted that scientific waste management is one of the top priorities on Kerala’s development agenda. Given Kerala’s high population density, ensuring scientific waste processing is a necessity of the times. Beyond personal hygiene, social hygiene must become the responsibility of every citizen, and public habits like littering must change to transform Kerala into a truly green state.
While acknowledging the progress made in waste management, the CM emphasized the need for further improvement and called for active participation from community groups, including residents’ associations. He clarified that the government will not approve unscientific waste management methods or false processing claims by shell companies.
He directed that comprehensive waste management projects be implemented effectively across all districts, with municipalities and grama panchayats jointly establishing scientific plants without causing inconvenience to local residents. With the rules coming into effect on April 1, 2026, all local bodies must work responsibly to protect public health and the environment.
Local Self-Government Minister K.M. Shaji presided over the function. Minister for Electricity, Environment, and Parliamentary Affairs Sunny Joseph, Thiruvananthapuram Mayor V.V. Rajesh, Pollution Control Board Chairperson Sreekala S., LSGD Principal Director Dr. Divya S. Iyer, Suchitwa Mission ED Dr. Binu Francis, and Member Secretary Dr. Ratheesh Menon were present. Regional workshops will be held in Thiruvananthapuram, Ernakulam, and Kozhikode to strengthen inter-departmental coordination.
