KOTTAYAM: The Kerala High Court has issued a definitive directive to verify and ensure the structural purity of the gold on the historic ‘Ezhara Ponnana’ (seven-and-a-half golden elephants) at the famous Ettumanoor Mahadeva Temple. The division bench specializing in Devaswom affairs issued this order explicitly to the Chief Vigilance Officer of the Travancore Devaswom Board (TDB). The judicial intervention comes in the wake of a formal complaint filed by a devotee alleging that the authentic gold layers were surreptitiously replaced with cheap copper plating during recent restoration works.
The legal proceedings were triggered by a detailed letter sent to the High Court Devaswom Bench by a local devotee identified as A. G. Prasad Kumar. The complainant stated that the iconic golden elephant idols had undergone upkeep and maintenance operations in the recent past. He alleged that during this period, the original high-value gold foils covering the statuettes were removed and subsequently covered using copper or similar low-cost base metals. Upon receiving the grievance, the High Court had immediately sought an official explanation from the temple’s Administrative Officer and senior TDB executives.
In response, the Devaswom authorities filed an official statement before the court declaring that no maintenance or structural alteration had been performed on the Ezhara Ponnana recently, adding that official inventory audits showed zero discrepancy in the recorded weight of the gold. While the High Court bench noted there was no immediate reason to disbelieve the official state report, it emphasized that a comprehensive physical evaluation is highly necessary given the sensitive nature of the allegations and public faith. Consequently, the court ordered the TDB Chief Vigilance Officer to personally supervise a physical inspection of the artifacts, supplemented by the technical expertise of a professional goldsmith.
