ISLAMABAD: The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) has issued a serious warning to Pakistan regarding the ongoing controversial “conservation activities” at Taxila, one of South Asia’s most vital Buddhist monastic complexes and an ancient Vedic historical monument. Allegations have surfaced that Pakistan’s Department of Archaeology and Museums utilized cement and other modern construction materials under the guise of restoration. This heavily contradicts the internationally recognized and accepted principles mandated by UNESCO for the conservation of ancient archaeological monuments.
According to a report by the Pakistani media outlet Dawn, UNESCO formally communicated to Islamabad that recent structural interventions in certain parts of this esteemed World Heritage Site have severely compromised its original authenticity and structural integrity. The global body cautioned that if immediate corrective measures are not taken, Taxila will be demoted to the list of ‘World Heritage in Danger’. Pakistan has been actively projecting Taxila on the international stage through global tourism campaigns and museum projects as part of its efforts to claim ownership over the Indus Valley Civilization and pre-Islamic history. Notably, Taxila served as one of the earliest prominent centers of higher education in the Indian subcontinent and housed a massive Buddhist Mahavihara. Preserving archaeological ruins from the Achaemenid, Maurya, Indo-Greek, and Kushan eras, the region remains a rich testament to ancient Vedic, Buddhist, and Greco-Buddhist heritage.
