Ramesh Chennithala Orders Vigilance Probe Against CEC Gyanesh Kumar, Says Action Taken After Consulting Chief Minister.

Thiruvananthapuram: Home Minister Ramesh Chennithala announced that a directive has been issued for a vigilance investigation into corruption allegations and related incidents during Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar’s tenure in Kerala. He clarified that urgent action was taken after consulting the Chief Minister in detail, as prima facie substance was found in the received complaint.

The minister pointed out that a project engineer had died by suicide alleging corruption and bureaucratic harassment within a project, and Gyanesh Kumar’s name was explicitly mentioned in one of the engineer’s two suicide notes.

The Home Minister stated that legal advice confirms there are no legal hurdles to investigating an individual currently holding the constitutional position of Chief Election Commissioner. Ramesh Chennithala confirmed that a comprehensive vigilance inquiry was ordered because the alleged corruption occurred while Kumar was serving as an IAS officer in another department previously.
