KOZHIKODE: The rapid transmission of the Shigella bacterial infection has caused widespread panic across Kerala, with two more individuals testing positive for the disease. The newly confirmed cases were reported from Kollam and Malappuram districts. A young woman hailing from Nedungolam in Kollam has been admitted to the Parippally Medical College Hospital following her diagnosis, while a 29-year-old youth has tested positive in Malappuram. Both patients are currently under the close surveillance of the state health department.
With the addition of these new cases, the cumulative number of Shigella infections detected in the state this year has risen to 135. Alarmingly, 59 of these cases were recorded in the month of June alone from various parts of Kerala. At present, the infection is predominantly concentrated in Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Thrissur, Malappuram, Kozhikode, and Wayanad districts. Just the previous day, the state had witnessed a sudden spike with 18 fresh cases being confirmed in a single day.
Earlier, Thrissur district had also documented two cases, where a four-year-old girl and a seven-year-old boy from Mangalam in Wadakkanchery contracted the infection. Meanwhile, the discovery of the Shigella bacteria in a commercial beverage displayed for sale at a local bakery in Kattakada, Thiruvananthapuram, has intensified public health anxiety. The Food Safety Department has confiscated the beverage and sent samples to central laboratories for advanced forensic analysis. Given that the waterborne disease spreads rapidly through contaminated water and unhygienic food, the Health Department has issued a strict directive urging the public to exercise maximum vigilance and consume only boiled drinking water.
