Kozhikode: The Samastha Kerala Jem-iyyathul Ulama has openly expressed its displeasure over the Indian Union Muslim League’s (IUML) decision to field female candidates in general seats for the upcoming Assembly elections.
Mushawara member Umar Faizi Mukkam stated that Samastha does not agree with women contesting from non-reserved seats. He noted that the organization had previously permitted women to contest only in local body elections where reservation was mandatory, and the current shift deviates from Samastha’s religious edicts (Fatwa).
He further advised the IUML to stick with Samastha’s stance for its own benefit and urged the party to distance itself from Jamaat-e-Islami and SDPI. The controversy arises as IUML, for the first time in its history, nominated Fathima Tahliya in Perambra and Jayanthi Rajan in Koothuparamba to contest from general constituencies. (KN)
