KANNUR: A 22-year-old youth, who was officially declared brain-dead after suffering severe injuries in a tragic road accident, has given a new lease of life to four patients through noble organ donation. Arjun, a native of Kannur, became a true symbol of hope after his grieving family consented to donate his organs following his untimely demise. His heart, liver, and two kidneys were donated, offering a vital second chance at life to four patients who were eagerly awaiting transplants.
Arjun was initially admitted to the Aster MIMS Hospital in Kannur with critical injuries following the accident. Despite the best efforts of the medical team to save his life, he was declared brain-dead on May 31. In the absolute midst of their profound grief, his parents took the courageous decision to donate his organs. Arjun’s heart was swiftly transported via an air-ambulance to a 48-year-old Malappuram native who is currently undergoing treatment at Aster Medcity in Kochi. Furthermore, one of his kidneys will be given to a patient at Aster MIMS in Kannur itself. The second kidney was rushed to the Kozhikode Government Medical College Hospital (MCH) and the liver was taken to the Baby Memorial Hospital in Kozhikode.
The entire complex organ transfer process was seamlessly coordinated through the Kerala State Organ and Tissue Transplant Organisation (K-SOTTO), which is the state government’s official organ donation nodal agency. “When one precious life is lost, becoming a source of hope for many others is perhaps the greatest example of ultimate humanity. The successful and timely transportation of the organs in this emergency scenario was the result of a massive collective effort. The state police, government departments, and K-SOTTO played a highly crucial role in making this process a complete success,” stated Anoop Nambiar, COO of Aster MIMS Kannur.
