THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Former DGP A Hemachandran has come out heavily against the internal rot within the Kerala Police force in his newly penned service story titled Adhikarathinte Vazhi, Aneethiyudeyum (The Path of Power, and of Injustice). In his book, the former top cop makes explosive revelations, including how a state police SP with an extremely poor track record throughout his service managed to secure an IPS designation. He mockingly describes the individual as a “Mahatma who went on to become the police chief.”
The book also addresses the toxic political culture in the state, stating that whenever a political murder takes place, political parties demand that investigations must strictly follow the list of accused persons provided by them. He points out that both the Left and the Right political fronts are birds of a feather when it comes to this practice. The book will be officially released on Wednesday by Home Minister Ramesh Chennithala, who will present a copy to Bindu, a woman from Nedumangad who was previously framed in a fabricated case by the police. Notably, former DGP A Hemachandran is currently serving as the police advisor to Home Minister Ramesh Chennithala. Hemachandran, a 1986-batch IPS officer, retired from public service in May 2020 while serving as the Director General of the Fire and Rescue Services. He had previously headed the Special Investigation Team (SIT) that probed the highly controversial Solar Scam case in the state.
Meanwhile, reports suggest that a massive top-to-bottom reshuffle is on the cards for the state police department. A crucial meeting between the Chief Minister and the Home Minister will take place today to finalize the changes. The reshuffle is expected to impact top ranks, ranging from the ADGP (Law and Order) to various district police chiefs (SPs). While city police commissioners will continue to remain in the DIG rank, additional responsibilities might be given to DIGs in certain police ranges. Sources also indicate that several women IPS officers are highly likely to be posted into key administrative positions across the state.
