KOTHAMANGALAM: The heartbreaking mass suicide of a four-member family who jumped into the Muvattupuzha River at Piravom has deeply shocked and grieved the entire state of Kerala. The completely destitute family had been reeling under absolute poverty and did not even possess a place of their own to live. It has been revealed that prior to taking the extreme step, the family was staying at a local lodge in Kothamangalam, which was temporarily arranged and funded by the local police force. The family had walked into the Kothamangalam Police Station exactly a week ago, desperately seeking humanitarian assistance.
Moved by the family’s extreme misery, the compassionate police officers voluntarily mobilized resources to provide them with immediate relief and essential supplies. Going a step further, the police personnel themselves identified and prepared a new rented house to ensure a stable roof for the family. The family was in the middle of preparing to relocate to this new accommodation when the shocking news of their death reached the station.
Kothamangalam Inspector and SHO Prashant Kumar K.R., along with his subordinate officers, are finding it impossible to come to terms with the reality that the family they had sheltered has perished in such a manner. “We had embraced them closely to our hearts; they shouldn’t have committed this blunder,” a deeply pained SHO Prashant Kumar recalled. The sudden demise of the family has turned into a deeply emotional tragedy for the entire police unit that had passionately tried to rebuild their broken lives.
