MALAPPURAM: In a strict crackdown on the illegal sale of alcohol to minors, the operator of a toddy shop at Changaramkulam in Malappuram has been remanded in judicial custody. The Changaramkulam police have also registered a criminal case against the owner of the establishment, identified as Jose, a native of Kunnamkulam. The decisive action follows a special anti-drug enforcement drive named ‘Toofan the Narco Hunt,’ during which police personnel intercepted nine underage students in an intoxicated state. On Saturday night, a police team spotted the nine minors consuming alcohol in the Kokkur area. Upon detailed questioning by the officers, the students confessed that they had purchased the toddy from the nearby shop and admitted to being regular customers at the establishment.
Based on the explicit statements provided by the students, the police detained and interrogated the shop’s staff, during which an employee confessed to illegally serving alcohol to the minors. The police received further inputs indicating that the establishment had a history of selling toddy to these children on multiple previous occasions. Investigations have revealed that the shop had been systematically supplying alcohol to numerous school and college students in violation of statutory laws. Following the revelation, local residents and various youth organizations have launched intense protests against the toddy shop, demanding permanent cancellation of its license.
