KOLLAM: A mentally unstable man created a tense situation for hours after hiding inside a storm-water drain. The man, identified as Gireesh (46) from Thundil House in Uliyakovil, was finally subdued with the help of local residents.
Gireesh had been hiding inside the drain for the past three days.
Fire force officials had been attempting to pull him out for the last two days. However, armed with an iron rod, he attempted to attack anyone who approached him, making the rescue operation extremely difficult. Even though his mother arrived at the spot and tried to persuade him, he refused to come out. A few days ago, Gireesh had trespassed into a house in the Uliyakovil area and launched an attack, following which the residents lodged a complaint against him at the police station.
Fearing police action, he entered and hid inside the nearby drain. Gireesh, who is addicted to substances and had previously exhibited mental instability, was treated at the Oolampara Mental Health Centre in Thiruvananthapuram earlier as well.
Around 5 PM yesterday, Kadappakada Fire Station personnel, with the help of local residents Rajesh, Manu, Sanil Kumar, and Aneesh Prakash, managed to overpower him. He was immediately shifted to a local hospital with police assistance. Procedures are currently underway to transfer him to Thiruvananthapuram for further medical care.
