KOLLAM: A part of a human skull was recovered from the backwater shore near the Pezhumthuruth Edachil bridge in Munroe Island Panchayat.
The incident occurred around 6:30 PM on Sunday. Former Grama Panchayat member S. Abhijith and his friends were standing near the bridge when they spotted an object resembling a human skull. Upon being informed, a police team led by Kizhakkekallada Sub-Inspector Ananthu Mohan arrived at the scene and confirmed it to be a human skull. Following the inquest, the skull was shifted to the police station, and Kizhakkekallada police have registered a case and initiated an investigation.
The recovered skull fragment will be handed over to the Forensic Department in Thiruvananthapuram for DNA profiling. Officials stated that only after determining the age and origin of the skull through forensic analysis can the investigation be expanded by focusing on previously reported missing persons.
Found in a Decayed State
The skull was found embedded in mud along the shoreline near the bridge, with its parts in a heavily decayed condition. As the area experiences strong high tides, it is suspected that the remains might have washed ashore when water levels rose. Alternatively, it is also presumed that the skull could have been dumped into the backwaters along with soil during the removal or renovation of old structures or graves.
