ALAPPUZHA: A Class 11 student at a government school in Haripad was brutally assaulted by a group of schoolmates, allegedly after he turned down a romantic proposal from a female classmate. The 17-year-old victim sustained severe injuries, suffering bleeding from his nose and mouth, and was admitted to the Government Medical College Hospital at Vandanam, where he underwent treatment for four days.
According to the victim’s mother, the assault took place on October 15. “The attack happened when he went to wash his hands after having his meal. A student approached him claiming someone wanted to speak with him and led him into a classroom. Once inside, a group of around 10 to 16 students launched a unprovoked attack on him without offering any explanation,” she told reporters.
She further revealed that a student belonging to the group later disclosed to her that the assault was executed as a ‘quotation’ contract.
The motive behind the violent attack reportedly stems from an incident shortly after the school reopened, when a female classmate expressed romantic interest in the boy. The boy politely declined her proposal, assuming the matter was resolved.
However, the girl allegedly contacted her former boyfriend, a 19-year-old student at an ITI in Chengannur. Harbouring a grudge over the rejection, the 19-year-old instructed his associates studying at the Haripad school to assault the boy.
School administrators confirmed that the students involved in the assault have been placed under suspension for a month. Local police have registered a case and initiated a formal investigation into the incident.
