CM V D Satheesan Announces Free KSRTC Travel for Women and Hike in Asha Workers’ Wages in First Cabinet Meet.

In its very first cabinet meeting after assuming power, the newly formed United Democratic Front (UDF) government in Kerala led by Chief Minister V D Satheesan announced a series of major welfare decisions. Addressing his maiden press conference as Chief Minister, Satheesan highlighted that the government is moving at a record speed to fulfill the promises made in the UDF election manifesto. Among the key structural changes, a dedicated department will be created for the welfare of senior citizens.

Fulfilling the widely discussed ‘Indira Guarantee’ from their election campaign, the Chief Minister announced that women can travel for free in KSRTC buses starting from June 15. Keeping the promise made to Asha workers, their honorarium has been hiked to Rs 12,000, with an assurance of further increments as the state’s financial health improves. Additionally, the government has announced a Rs 1,000 salary hike for Anganwadi staff, pre-primary ayahs, and school cooks.

The cabinet has selected former minister and Ambalapuzha MLA G Sudhakaran as the Pro-tem Speaker. The swearing-in ceremony of the newly elected MLAs will take place on May 21, followed by the election of the Speaker on May 22. In key legal postings, T Asif Ali has been appointed as the Director General of Prosecution and Adv. Jayju Babu will take charge as the new Advocate General. To bring transparency regarding the state’s finances, the Chief Minister stated that a comprehensive white paper on the current economic situation will be released soon.

The Chief Minister also announced the formation of a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to re-examine the controversial assault case during the previous government’s Navakerala Sadas, where protesting youths were beaten up by the then Chief Minister’s security entourage. Satheesan clarified that the SIT is being formed in compliance with court directions and emphasized that the move is purely for justice and does not stem from political vendetta.
