OACHIRA: Heavy rains and overcast skies failed to dampen the festive spirit of Onam in Oachira, as thousands of shoppers flooded the town’s markets and temple junction. Ahead of the traditional Uthrada Paachil, commercial streets, textile shops, and local vegetable markets saw a massive surge in footfall despite ongoing weather alerts.
Although street vendors faced initial disruptions due to incessant showers, the enthusiasm of buyers turned the tide in favor of local traders. The demand for Onam attire (Onakkodi), flowers, organic vegetables, and traditional payasam ingredients reached its peak.
To manage the heavy inflow of vehicles and pedestrians amidst the downpour, the Oachira police have deployed extra personnel and implemented targeted traffic diversions alongside in required areas. Undeterred by the rainy climate, the bustling crowds in Oachira demonstrate the vibrant resilience of Kerala’s biggest cultural festival.
Preparations for the historic 28th Onam Kalakettu festival at the Oachira Parabrahma Temple have reached their final stages across various local karas (villages) of Onattukara. Artisans and local committees are working around the clock, assembling timber frameworks and decorating giant Kettu Kaalakal (bull effigies).
As the fabrication work picks up momentum, severe traffic bottlenecks and crowd build-ups are being witnessed across the town and neighboring access roads. Thousands of locals and visitors are flocking to fabrication sites to catch a glimpse of the towering structures under construction. Heavy vehicle movement carrying construction materials has further added to the congestion on National Highway 66 and arterial routes. Oachira police are deploying additional personnel and introducing diversions to manage the rising vehicular inflow ahead of the main festival day.
