KOLLAM: In a heart-wrenching road disaster, at least three people, including a school student and a private college lecturer, lost their lives after a speeding, soil-laden tipper lorry lost control and flipped directly into a roadside bus shelter at Nileswaram near Kottarakkara. The tragic incident occurred during the busy morning hours when young students and daily commuters were waiting at the shelter to catch buses to their respective institutions. According to local updates, the heavily loaded commercial vehicle was being driven at a dangerous speed when it veered off the tarmac, ploughed into the waiting zone, and capsized, trapping the commuters under its heavy metal chassis and tonnes of spilled soil.
Confirming the three fatalities, State Minister P.C. Vishnunath stated that the government views the reckless driving patterns of commercial tipper lorries with utmost gravity and will enforce stringent regulatory checkpoints to curb such road menaces. The victims have been identified as Harilal (54), a private college teacher; Parthip, a tenth-grade student at Carmel School; and Ajayakumar (45). The Minister added that rescue squads have successfully pulled out eight individuals from the debris, out of which two victims are fighting for their lives in critical care. He assured that the state administration will bear the complete medical expenses of the injured and that he would personally inspect the accident site shortly.
The catastrophic accident unfolded at the busy Mukkolimukku junction in Nileswaram, Kottarakkara. The impact of the crash was so severe that first responders and fire force personnel had to use hydraulic cutters to break open the mangled cabin of the truck to extricate the driver and the cleaner. The truck driver sustained severe polytrauma and is currently undergoing emergency medical care. Eyewitness accounts indicate that the driver lost control of the vehicle while attempting to abruptly steer clear of an oncoming vehicle on a narrow stretch. Those who sustained critical structural and internal injuries have been rushed to the Thiruvananthapuram Government Medical College Hospital for advanced treatment, while local police teams continue to clear the area.
