MUZAFFARABAD: A massive clash erupted in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK) during a march organised by the Joint Awami Action Committee towards Muzaffarabad. At least 12 people, including two security personnel, have reportedly been killed in the violent face-off between protesters and security forces. As the situation spiralled out of control, cities including Rawalakot were completely shut down. Authorities have imposed a strict media blackout to prevent information from leaking out of the conflict zones, completely snapping telecommunication networks, including the internet. The popular uprising has intensified just ahead of the legislative assembly elections in PoK, scheduled for July 27. The agitators are demanding the abolition of 12 reserved seats for refugees in the assembly, a reduction in electricity tariffs, and the provision of subsidised wheat. The Joint Awami Action Committee has also demanded an immediate end to military atrocities in the region and the release of local leaders and protesters jailed for their participation in the ongoing agitation.
The Pakistani administration is coming down heavily on the mass protests. Around 4,000 border security personnel, including the Pakistan Rangers and the Frontier Corps, have been deployed in the region to thwart the march. The death toll surged after the military resorted to firing tear gas shells and live bullets at the demonstrators. In an attempt to paint the protesters as an armed terrorist group, the Pakistani government has already registered cases against more than 150 individuals under anti-terrorism laws. A strict curfew and severe restrictions continue to remain in place in cities including Rawalakot.
