New Delhi/Thiruvananthapuram: The Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) has decided to convey its strong disagreement regarding the PM SHRI scheme at the upcoming UDF meeting. Following the Union government’s recent clarification in Parliament, the party leadership believes that failing to withdraw from the scheme could result in a severe political backlash. Consequently, the leadership plans to make its stance clear during the UDF meeting, evaluating that proceeding with PM SHRI would trigger widespread dissatisfaction among party cadres.
Meanwhile, the state government remains firm in its decision to move forward with the PM SHRI scheme. The UDF leadership has maintained that it will refrain from making public statements to avoid escalating the issue further. The government has decided to pursue legal action if there is any central interference in the academic syllabus.
Earlier, the UDF argued that the state government could not back out of the PM SHRI Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) and decided to proceed with the scheme, contemplating the selection of around 200 schools. This decision drew severe criticism against IUML leaders, who had previously declared that the PM SHRI scheme would be dumped into the Arabian Sea once the UDF returned to power.
However, the Union government clarified in the Rajya Sabha that states have the option to withdraw from the scheme. Responding to a question by MP P.V. Abdul Wahab, Union Minister of State Jayant Chaudhary stated that states withdrawing or refusing to sign would lose out on scheme benefits, adding that the state is yet to submit the list of schools after signing the MoU.
