ERODE: A man was arrested in Sathyamangalam, Tamil Nadu, for attempting to poison the mid-day meals at a government school in Ramabayaloor village, Erode district. The accused, B. Arumugam, attempted the crime in retaliation after his wife, Alammal, was dismissed from her cook position at the school due to poor quality of cooking.
Arumugam allegedly lured a school student with the promise of new clothes and tasked the child with adding a chemical substance into the prepared sambar. However, the plot was foiled when teachers noticed a suspicious yellow stain on the child’s hands and interrogated the student. The school currently educates 51 students, all of whom are served breakfast and lunch under Tamil Nadu state welfare schemes.
Medical evaluations revealed that the chemical used was highly toxic, capable of causing rapid multi-organ failure if consumed. Following his arrest, Arumugam was remanded to judicial custody. Meanwhile, Tamil Nadu police have formed two special teams to track down and arrest his absconding wife.
