THRISSUR: Thrissur city is all set to be taken over by ‘tigers’ today. Around 400 performers from nine teams will assemble at the Swaraj Round, shaking their bellies and dancing to traditional percussion beats.
By afternoon, the tiger troupes will start moving towards the Swaraj Round accompanied by traditional music ensembles and elaborate tableaux from their respective localities.
In view of the Pulikali celebrations, a local holiday has been declared in Thrissur taluk for this afternoon. The holiday applies to educational institutions, government offices, and establishments functioning under the Negotiable Instruments Act 1881, including cooperative societies.
A total of nine teams—Viyyoor Yuvajana Sangham, Kuttankulangara Desam, Patturaikkal Desam, Sitaram Mill Desam, Chakkamukku Desam, Kanattukara Desam, Olarikkara, Sankaramkulangara Desam, and Ayyanthole Desam—will participate in the event.
Along with traditional tiger guises like striped, black, and spotted tigers, female and child tigers will also perform. Viyyoor Desam was the champion team last year.
