Dubai: Agimol Pradeep, an Indian-origin nurse based in the UK who has spearheaded campaigns for organ and stem-cell donation awareness, has won the prestigious Aster Guardians Global Nursing Award carrying a cash prize of $250,000. Pradeep, who works as a senior transplant coordinator at King’s College Hospital and serves as an honorary senior lecturer at the University of Salford, received the honor at a ceremony held in Kochi, India. She was selected as the winner from a pool of over 134,000 applicants across 214 countries and economies.
Reacting to the global achievement, Pradeep expressed that the award felt surreal and that she considered herself a representative of her entire profession rather than an individual winner. Her commitment to organ donation campaigning stemmed directly from her clinical experience in transplant care, where she witnessed numerous patients lose their lives while waiting for matching organ donors.
She expects that this international recognition will provide a platform to extend her awareness initiatives to nations where healthcare infrastructure and organ transplant frameworks are still developing. Emphasizing her primary objective, she stated that no patient should lose their life due to the unavailability of organs for failure treatment.
Highlighting the structural disparities between nations, Pradeep noted that developed countries like the UK maintain structured organ transplant networks and centralized waiting lists, facilitating transparent medical care. However, she pointed out that despite having such advanced infrastructure, the UK continues to lose around three patients every day due to a shortage of donor organs.
