Wayanad Landslide: Night Rescue Intensifies at Kalladi Tunnel Site; 5 Dead, 3 Missing as Ministers Rush to Meppadi.

KALPETTA: Night-time rescue operations are continuing on a war footing at the Kalladi tunnel road construction zone in Wayanad following a devastating landslide on Tuesday morning. Ministers T Siddique and AP Anil Kumar reached the disaster zone to personally supervise and coordinate the emergency services. The ministers rushed to Wayanad immediately after holding a high-level briefing with Chief Minister VD Satheesan. An emergency review meeting was convened at the WIMS Hospital, where the injured are admitted, led by the ministers and DIG K Karthik. Following the assessment, the ministers visited the injured victims to ensure proper medical attention.

The search operation to locate those trapped under the massive debris near the Meenakshi bridge in Kalladi is progressing rapidly despite heavy downpours. So far, five casualties have been officially confirmed, while three individuals remain missing. Out of the seven people initially rescued with injuries, the condition of one person is reported to be extremely critical. Two individuals with minor injuries were discharged after first aid, leaving a total of nine patients currently under medical care at WIMS Hospital. The hospitalized victims have been identified as Hira Kumar (32), Dileep (19), Suraj Yadav (25), Sanjay Thakur (35), Rajaneesh (27), Tanmay Ghosh (28), Koopamal (Jaya) (37), Kunchu (39), and Santhosh Kumar.

The catastrophic landslide washed down tons of mud, completely burying nearby houses, a mosque, a local bus stop, and multiple buses that had transported workers to the construction site. The vital Meenakshi bridge has also been heavily damaged and is currently in a highly precarious state. Meanwhile, as a matter of abundant caution against further geo-hazards, authorities decided to relocate the initial relief camp from Chulika GLP School to the Kanjirode Polytechnic College. All displaced families sheltered at the school are being safely transferred to the newly designated facility at the polytechnic college.
