BANKURA: Prime Minister Narendra Modi has launched a scathing attack on the Trinamool Congress (TMC), accusing the party of “betraying” women by obstructing the Constitution (131st Amendment) Bill, 2026 in Parliament. Addressing a massive election rally at Bishnupur in Bankura district, the Prime Minister asserted that the women of West Bengal would punish the ruling party in the upcoming assembly elections for this betrayal.
Modi criticized the Mamata Banerjee-led government for its opposition to the bill, which aimed to implement a 33 per cent reservation for women in Parliament and state legislative assemblies before 2029. By raising this issue, the Prime Minister attempted to turn what was perceived as a legislative setback for the BJP into a potent campaign theme in West Bengal. This strategy is significant as women voters and beneficiaries of state welfare schemes have become the most decisive electoral bloc in the state.
Seeking to push the TMC onto the defensive, PM Modi alleged that the ruling party acted against the bill because women are increasingly challenging the TMC’s ‘mahajungleraj’ (lawlessness) in West Bengal. He claimed that the TMC’s stance is a direct affront to women’s empowerment and predicted a strong reaction from the electorate in the polling booths.
