HOSAPETE: Marking a profound shift toward cooperative federalism in managing shared water resources, the official inauguration of 33 newly installed crest gates at the Tungabhadra Dam on June 25 was celebrated as a milestone in regional administration. The high-profile ceremony was attended by the Chief Ministers of Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, and Telangana, alongside the Union Minister for Jal Shakti, highlighting rare political coordination over an essential transboundary river network. Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu described the event as “history in the making,” stating that the completion of the massive crest gate replacement infrastructure signifies a new era of proactive cooperation in India’s inter-state river management framework. The project comes nearly two years after structural damage during the August 2024 floods washed away a crest gate, sparking intense anxiety among lakhs of regional farmers.
The Tungabhadra Dam, strategically located near Hosapete in Karnataka, is recognized as one of India’s largest and most crucial multipurpose river valley infrastructure setups. Built across the heavy-flowing Tungabhadra River, it provides irrigation, municipal drinking water, hydroelectric power, and localized industrial water supply. The sprawling reservoir serves as an economic lifeline for the drought-prone districts of Ballari, Vijayanagara, Koppal, and Raichur in Karnataka, while simultaneously irrigating vast stretches of agricultural farmlands in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana via an extensive canal network system. Beyond its core agricultural purpose, the reservoir sustains essential regional fisheries, drives comprehensive groundwater recharge, protects surrounding biodiversity, and stimulates local tourism sectors. For over seven decades, it has anchored food security for millions by enabling steady cultivation of paddy, cotton, sugarcane, chilli, and various horticultural crops.
Given that the original crest gates had been operational for more than 70 consecutive years—far exceeding their calculated design lifespan—the total overhaul became a safety priority after the 2024 mishap. Following meticulous technical assessments, engineers successfully replaced all 33 gates with structurally superior modern steel radial gates featuring enhanced operating mechanisms. This cooperative framework, executed through the unified Tungabhadra Board and the Union Ministry of Jal Shakti, successfully bypassed traditional political divides to protect agrarian interests across 15 lakh acres of dependent command area. Concurrently, to combat severe sedimentation that has reduced the reservoir’s effective storage capacity from 133 TMC to 102 TMC, the Union Jal Shakti Minister announced federal backing for scientific desilting studies, which hydrologists view as a vital complementary approach alongside the proposed Navali Reservoir project.
