Kochi: Saritha and Muhammad Shafi, who were arrested from an Ernakulam hotel, used a unique method to smuggle MDMA. The duo was apprehended by Excise officials recently while selling the synthetic drug. Saritha transported the contraband concealed inside a menstrual cup placed in her private parts. The arrested persons have been identified as Muhammad Shafi, a resident of Kottepuri, Thrikkunnapuzha, Alappuzha, and Saritha, a native of Alappuzha. Their routine involved purchasing large quantities of narcotics from Bengaluru and selling them after renting rooms in various lodges across Ernakulam and Alappuzha.
Saritha carried the MDMA inside a menstrual cup placed in her private parts. Her technique involved filling the cup with MDMA, sealing one side with glue, and hiding it inside her body to transport it undetected. On their way from Bengaluru by bus, an inspection was conducted at Iritty in Kannur. Although Shafi threw away the contraband he was holding, the Excise team could not detect any drugs on Saritha during the search as it was hidden inside the menstrual cup. Later, both reached Ernakulam with this chemical drug for sale.
They were selling MDMA at a rate of Rs 4,000 per gram. Saritha previously worked as a home nurse, while Muhammad Shafi was working as an interior designer. Excise officials stated that they have received clear leads about the persons who bought MDMA from them, and they are currently under surveillance.
The Excise team seized 94.032 grams of MDMA worth lakhs of rupees in the market. Muhammad Shafi was first taken into custody from a lodge in Ernakulam South with 65.27 grams of MDMA. When the Excise raided the room in Ernakulam, Saritha had gone to Alappuzha to sell MDMA. The Excise team then waited for her return. Saritha, who reached Ernakulam later, was taken into custody around 10:30 PM.
During interrogation, Saritha revealed that the MDMA taken for sale was kept at a house in Alappuzha. The Excise team then took the accused to Alappuzha and recovered an additional 28.76 grams of MDMA. A total of 94.032 grams of MDMA, a mobile phone, and Rs 17,770 obtained from drug sales were seized from them. The raid was led by Ernakulam Excise Inspector Abhiraj R and his team.
