DUBAI: Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has announced that the final bridge under the World Trade Centre Roundabout Development Project will officially open to traffic on October 30. The 1,000-meter-long, two-lane bridge boasts a capacity to handle 3,000 vehicles per hour, specifically catering to traffic moving from Al Majlis Street toward 2nd December Street.
According to an official RTA statement, the bridge will dramatically ease congestion at one of Dubai’s busiest key intersections, slashing average commute times from Al Majlis Street to 2nd December Street from six minutes down to just one minute.
With this operational launch, the RTA completes all major civil works under the comprehensive World Trade Centre Roundabout Development Project. Built at a total cost exceeding AED 696 million ($189.4 million), the overall initiative encompasses five flyover bridges spanning a combined length of 5,000 meters.
His Excellency Mattar Al Tayer, Director General and Chairman of the Board of Executive Directors of RTA, stated that the timely execution aligns with the directives of Dubai’s visionary leadership to continually upgrade road infrastructure, enhance traffic flow on Sheikh Zayed Road, and boost seamless connectivity between the emirate’s primary economic and commercial hubs.
Al Tayer emphasized that the project expands the capacity of the surrounding road network to keep pace with Dubai’s rapid population, urban, and economic expansion. He added that the integrated mobility system will further consolidate Dubai’s global standing in business, investment, and tourism while enhancing daily quality of life for both residents and visitors.
Highlighting its strategic relevance, Al Tayer noted that the World Trade Centre Roundabout serves as a pivotal nexus on Sheikh Zayed Road—the main traffic artery of the emirate—linking key transport corridors with major commercial and residential districts.
These primary zones include the Dubai World Trade Centre, which hosts global exhibitions and conferences, and the Dubai International Financial Centre (DIFC), alongside surrounding commercial neighborhoods that experience dense daily traffic volumes.
The completed project establishes free-flowing traffic connections in multiple directions, reinforcing links between Sheikh Zayed Road and adjacent arterials. Consequently, the average vehicle delay at the intersection will drop sharply from 12 minutes to just 90 seconds, directly benefiting over 500,000 residents and tourists daily.
Al Tayer pointed out that the project works in synergy with the ongoing Al Mustaqbal Street Development Project. Scheduled for completion next year, the Al Mustaqbal project includes bridges and underpass tunnels spanning 1,500 meters, alongside widening the corridor to four lanes in each direction.
The World Trade Centre Roundabout serves as a crucial intersection linking Sheikh Zayed Road with five major arterials: Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Street, Sheikh Rashid Street, 2nd December Street, Za’abeel Palace Street, and Al Majlis Street.
The core redevelopment involved converting the former surface roundabout into an advanced at-grade signalized junction complemented by five elevated bridges spanning 5,000 meters, effectively providing unimpeded traffic movement in all directions.
