RIYADH: Saudi Arabia has announced a nation-wide increase in electricity, water, and sewage tariffs, effective January 1, 2027. To offset the financial impact on households, the Kingdom simultaneously unveiled royal directives instituting comprehensive financial support mechanisms for citizens.
The royal order incorporates a SR 500 ($133) monthly allowance increase for designated civilian and military state employees, pensioners, and beneficiaries under the social security framework. Additionally, the directives feature strategic workforce initiatives aimed at elevating the minimum wage thresholds for Saudi nationals employed in the private sector under the Nitaqat program. According to the official Saudi Press Agency (SPA), King Salman bin Abdulaziz issued the financial relief package following detailed recommendations submitted by Crown Prince and Prime Minister Mohammed bin Salman. The state directives coincided with official utility tariff recalibration schedules published by Saudi Energy and the National Water Company (NWC).
While the immediate relief funds are designed to cushion eligible national households against elevated operational utility costs, the broader structural initiatives focus on boosting private-sector compensation standards for Saudi employees.
