DHAKA: Reports indicate that Bangladesh is considering joining the ‘Mecca Pact’, a strategic security alliance formed by Saudi Arabia, Pakistan, and Turkey. Crucial discussions in this regard took place during a meeting between Bangladesh State Minister for Foreign Affairs Humayun Kabir and Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Faisal bin Farhan Al Saud on the sidelines of the OIC Foreign Ministers’ meeting in Jeddah. Foreign media reports state that Saudi Arabia has extended an official invitation to Bangladesh to join the alliance. The Mecca alliance operates on a collective defense model, where an attack on any member state is considered an attack on all member nations. Following earlier talks in Saudi Arabia, the bloc was officially formed by Saudi Arabia, Turkey, and Pakistan in August. This step comes as part of Bangladesh’s efforts to strengthen diplomatic ties with Pakistan and Saudi Arabia after the new government assumed power. Jamaat-e-Islami, a conservative political entity in Bangladesh, reacted by stating that joining the pact is a sovereign decision of Bangladesh and that external parties need not be concerned.
Bangladesh potentially becoming part of the Mecca Pact poses significant security threats and strategic concerns for India’s regional safety. A growing military and strategic influence of Pakistan in neighboring Bangladesh could severely impact the security of India’s northeastern states. India fears this alignment could allow Pakistan-based terror networks to launch proxy wars from Bangladeshi soil and escalate cross-border terrorism. Contrary to the Bangladeshi administration’s declared foreign policy stance of ‘Neither Delhi nor Pindi (Rawalpindi/Pakistan), Bangladesh First’, the current approach leans closer to Pakistan. Although India maintains strong bilateral ties with Saudi Arabia, both Turkey and Pakistan consistently adopt anti-India stances in international forums. Bangladesh joining hands with them would create tremendous strategic pressure along India’s eastern border.
