THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a warning stating that heavy rains will continue to lash the state. A yellow alert has been sounded today for six districts stretching from Thiruvananthapuram to Ernakulam. The weather agency has predicted isolated heavy rainfall in these regions. Heavy rain in this context implies a cumulative rainfall ranging between 64.5 mm and 115.5 mm within a 24-hour period. Widespread rainfall is expected over South and Central Kerala, accompanied by strong winds and lightning strikes, according to the department.
The weather department also forecasts that the southwest monsoon is likely to advance into Lakshadweep within the next two days. In the coming three hours, isolated places in Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Alappuzha, Kottayam, Ernakulam, and Kozhikode districts are likely to experience light to moderate rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms and gusty winds reaching speeds of up to 40 km/h. Light rain is also expected at isolated places in the remaining districts. Meanwhile, the Indian National Centre for Ocean Information Services (INCOIS) stated that swell surges, locally known as ‘Kallakkadal’ phenomenon, could trigger sea incursions along the Kerala coast until 11:30 PM tonight, with high waves ranging from 0.8 to 1.6 meters. The weather office has advised fishermen and coastal residents to exercise extreme caution due to the risk of sea erosion.
