MALAPPURAM: A serious complaint has been raised against the Ponnani Government Taluq Hospital in Malappuram for allegedly denying timely emergency treatment to a patient who arrived with a snakebite and was vomiting blood. The victim, identified as Shahala Thasni, a native of Padathangadi in Edappal, faced the harrowing ordeal. Shahala stated that the hospital staff administered a painkiller and an injection only after the local police actively intervened in the matter. Meanwhile, the hospital authorities explained that the treatment could not be provided immediately due to the absence of a general physician at the facility.
According to Shahala, the female doctor on duty behaved extremely rudely and bluntly told her, “I cannot treat you, get out without delivering further dialogues.” Despite being repeatedly informed that it was a dangerous case of a snakebite and that she was experiencing severe body pain, the doctor refused to provide medical care. When the victim complained about her excruciating pain, the doctor dismissively replied that she did not care about any of it and ordered her to leave the premises immediately.
The young woman had rushed to the Ponnani Taluq Hospital after she began repeatedly vomiting blood and experiencing severe physical agony following the snakebite. Facing such a hostile response from the medical professional, she directly approached the Ponnani Police Station to lodge an official complaint. While inside the police station, Shahala vomited blood again. Realizing the gravity and urgency of the situation, the Sub-Inspector (SI) immediately called the hospital authorities and demanded emergency intervention. Following this direct order from the police, the hospital management finally relented and administered the necessary injection and painkiller to the victim.
