CHENNAI: It is ‘Thalaiva’ day as Rajinikanth’s much-awaited film ‘Jailer 2’ releases today, sending fans into a frenzy. Visuals from outside Chennai theatres have already gone viral on social media. In the viral videos, enthusiastic fans are seen pouring milk over Rajinikanth’s gigantic cutout outside Rohini Theatre in Koyambedu, Chennai, while chanting ‘Thalaiva’ and performing aarti with immense fervor.
Helmed by Nelson Dilipkumar and backed by Kalanithi Maran under the banner of Sun Pictures, ‘Jailer 2’ is the direct sequel to Rajinikanth’s 2023 blockbuster hit. The film boasts a stellar star cast featuring Ramya Krishnan, S.J. Suryah, Mohanlal, Vidya Balan, Suraj Venjaramoodu, and Mithun Chakraborty, alongside special cameo appearances by Mohanlal, Hrithik Roshan, Shivarajkumar, and Jackie Shroff. The film’s music is composed by Anirudh Ravichander, with cinematography handled by Vijay Kartik Kannan and editing by R. Nirmal.
The first installment, ‘Jailer’, released on August 10, 2023, followed the gripping journey of Muthuvel Pandian as he was drawn back into a world of violence when his family came under threat. The movie emerged as a major commercial success, further solidifying Rajinikanth’s unmatched box-office appeal across regional markets and generating massive anticipation for the sequel.
Anirudh Ravichander returns as the music director, reuniting with director Nelson and Rajinikanth following the phenomenal success of the first film. The timing highlights Rajinikanth’s enduring stardom, as his films consistently inspire grand celebrations, packed first-day shows, and elaborate fan activities across the country.
The sequel’s release also coincides with a competitive festive release calendar. Vijay Deverakonda and Rashmika Mandanna’s ‘Ranabaali’ is scheduled to hit cinemas on October 16, just a day after ‘Jailer 2’. This box-office clash adds an extra layer of competition, particularly in southern markets, as both big-budget ventures vie to attract holiday audiences.
